TOPIC 1: Introduction to Academic Integrity
1.1.2 Technology as a threat to academic integrity
The presence of digital devices like mobile phones, iPods, MP3, Mordern Scientific Calculators, microphones, and wireless receivers for information transfer and retrieval has the increased chances of academic dishonesty (Thomas, 2015; Edussuriya, Marambe, Wanniarachchi & Ramanayake, 2014; Cruz, Costa, Martins, Gonçalves & Barroso, 2015; Exposito, Ross & Matteson, 2015). Students undertaking examinations can text to someone outside to get answers and sometimes with the emergence of sophisticated mobile phones a student can download information from the internet through wireless connections available. Use of modern scientific calculators can also support plagiarism. The modern calculators can store formulas and text. On the whole the usefulness and ease of use of technology are attributed to increased cases of academic dishonesty.
