This is the fourth module in a suite of 5 openly licenced Digital Fluency modules developed at OUT in collaboration with OER Africa to address the needs of Academic staff in the 21st Century.
In this module learners will be introduced to issues related to academic integrity, which has become a matter of increasing concern in the digital age. Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has been widely embraced and much information and many resources are readily accessible through the internet. However, these available resources may be licensed or copyrighted in a variety of ways, and adhering to this may cause challenges in ensuring academic integrity in higher education. Although the promotion and use of licensed Open Educational Resources (OER) goes some way towards mitigating this challenge, attention needs to be paid to the user’s behaviour when dealing with any resource, data, or information, whatever its licensing. Teachers and learners should be supported in employing newly acquired digital skills in an efficient, effective and appropriate manner within an academic environment. This module is therefore intended to stimulate ethical thinking and behaviour, and promote good practice in evaluating and using available resources to create quality scholarly reports and academic resources. In order to promote academic integrity this module has been designed to provide learners with the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience via a series of practical activities.

The learning design module will expose you to a curriculum approach that integrates diverse learning principles, theories and methodologies in order to effectively design learning environments that help you achieve your intended learning outcomes as an educationalist. Learning design is a crucial concept in the learning process because individuals learn differently and the learning design approach provides guidance and support by utilising various pedagogical strategies and techniques that motivate, engage and excite learners.

Nowadays there is a large amount of educational material available online for teaching and learning and research purposes. Open Educational Resources (OERs) provide a means to produce and share knowledge by taking advantage of the digital environment supported by the internet. Through using OER guided by open licenses, users can freely retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute content over the internet, thereby enhancing teaching and learning experiences. This module is aimed at providing the learner with basic guidance on OERs, including underlying concepts, and encouraging practical use of OERs.
